Professor Andrew StewartThe 2001 Visiting Professor was Professor Andrew Stewart, Chancellor's Research Professor, University of California, Berkeley. Professor Stewart was educated at Cambridge and through the British Schools at Athens and Rome. His first teaching post was at the University of Otago in New Zealand. He has been at Berkeley since 1979. Professor Stewart is one of the leading authorities in the world on Classical sculpture. One of his major works is Greek Sculpture: An Exploration (in two volumes) which was published by New Haven Press in 1990. His other recent publications are Faces of Power: Alexander's Image and Hellenistic Politics (Berkeley, 1993) and Art, Desire, and the Body in Ancient Greece (Cambridge, 1997). He produced all the Greek sculpture entries for The Oxford Classical Dictionary (3rd edition, 1996) and the chapter "Greek Sculpture" in The Oxford Illustrated History of Western Art (ed. Martin Kemp). Since 1986 he has directed the University of California, Berkeley's team excavating at Tel Dor in Israel. During his visit to Australia from the middle of September to the end of October he visited all the capital cities in the country and lectured in all major universities, as well as addressing the societies of Friends of the AAIA and three schools.
