Fellowship for Research in Greece 2009-2010 The closing date for applications is 29 May 2009. Applications should be mailed to:
Professor Alexander Cambitoglou Director The Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens Madsen Building (F09) University of Sydney NSW 2006 Fax: 9351 7693 Email: acambito@mail.usyd.edu.au General Information 1 Purpose and Period Covered The purpose of the Fellowship is to support scholars who must spend time for their research in Greece. The fellowship is tenable for twelve months beginning on October 1 of the year during which it is awarded. 2 Areas of Research The areas of research are Prehistoric and Classical Archaeology, History and Literature, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies. 3 Eligibility Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents in Australia and must have a BA degree with Honours or equivalent qualifications. Preference will be given to students enrolled for a formal postgraduate course in an Australian University requiring the writing of a thesis on a topic that makes their stay in Greece essential to their research. More senior scholars, members of the academic staff of Universities and applicants that have already held the Fellowship in previous years are not excluded, provided they can show that a stay in Greece will benefit their research. 4 Value The value of the Fellowship is at present $13,000. Applicants should bear in mind that the fellowship is not meant to cover all the expenses of the successful candidate but rather to make a substantial contribution toward them. Adjustments to the value are made from time to time. 5 Duration In principle the Fellowship will be offered for one year, but it may be renewed for a second year, and in special cases, for a third year. During any stay in Athens the Fellow must reside in the Institute Hostel and pay the appropriate student rate. The Institute can provide accommodation in a twin-bedroom if the Fellow is accompanied by a spouse or partner.
6 Conditions The recipient of the Fellowship must spend at least nine months in Greece; the other three months may be spent, with the approval of the Director, in other countries, if travelling outside of Greece is useful for their work. While no strict rules can be applied about publication, the successful applicant implicitly undertakes the obligation to publish the results of his or her investigation and to acknowledge formally the assistance received from the Institute. A certificate of good health is required from a doctor and, in the case of postgraduate students, the names of two referees who would accept to write directly and in confidence to the Director of the Institute about the applicant’s research ability and personality. 7 Assistance to the Institute While the main purpose of the Fellowship is to help the recipient to carry out research, the Institute expects that the successful candidate will contribute a few hours’ work per month towards its operation. This does not apply to senior candidates. More particularly, the Institute expects a Fellow to give a lecture or seminar for its Academic Programme in Athens and may ask her or him to contribute toward the running of a Summer School, including escorting its participants to museums and sites and lecturing to them. 8 Language Qualifications Serious research in Classical studies is scarcely possible without a reading ability in at least one foreign language. A knowledge of languages may be a deciding factor in the choice between two otherwise equal applicants. The Executive Board of the Institute may require a language test in Modern Greek at the end of the first semester before renewing a Fellowship. This does not apply to senior candidates. 9 Responsibilities While the successful candidate will be free and indeed encouraged to work in a way that suits him or her best, a Fellow unavoidably will be a representative of the Institute in a foreign country. The Fellow therefore must refrain from acting in a way that may hurt the sensibilities of the people in the host country or damage the relations of the Institute with its authorities and the other Foreign Schools and Institutes. Administratively the recipient of the Fellowship will be responsible to the Director (or in his absence, the Deputy Director) and ultimately to the Executive Board especially with regard to the duties mentioned in paragraph 7 above. If necessary a Fellow can appeal directly to the Executive Board. Misconduct or activities that may damage the relations of the Institute with the Greek authorities and the other Foreign Schools and Institutes may lead to the suspension of the Fellowship. 10 Administrative Assistance While in Greece the Fellow will receive assistance from the Institute and, more particularly, from its Deputy Director through the Athens Office about such matters as permission to use libraries and permission to study in museums. While the Deputy Director will do his best to assist, the successful candidate must inform himself/herself about visas, residence permits and any other matters concerning working in Greece, and exit from and re-entry to the country. 11 Selection The selection of the Fellow will be made by a Committee consisting mainly of academics appointed for this purpose by the Executive Board. 12 Submission of Application
